Sony announces new PlayStation Vita games & Mobile gaming service

The service, previously known as the PlayStation Suite, will provide apps for a range of devices including the PlayStation Vita, Sony's smartphone and tablet range and some Android devices.

The service was one of several announcements made by Sony at the Gamescon video game trade show in Cologne.

As part of a range of measures aimed at boosting the PlayStation Vita, Sony announced that PlayStation 3 owners would be able to use the Vita as a controller from later this month, following a firmware update.

The company also previewed a service called Cross Buy, which would allow gamers to pay once for PS3 and Vita versions of the same title. Sony will also add the PlayStation Plus service to the Vita, as well as bringing the PlayStation One game catalogue to the portable console.

Two new PlayStation Vita games were announced at the German games show. Killzone Mercenary is a first-person shooter that utilises the Vita's touch controls, while Tearaway is a game from the makers of LittleBigPlanet and is set in a world made of paper.

In a recent interview a senior Sony executive said that the company was struggling to get third-party developers to support the PlayStation Vita. Shuhei Yoshida told PlayStation: The Official Magazine that he was having "a more difficult time than I anticipated".

He said: "We will continue to talk to development communities and publishing partners and tell them why Vita can provide a great experience for the IPs they have and I hope the Assassin’s Creed game will prove that."

Sony has not provided sales data for the PlayStation Vita, which was released in Britain in February, but last week said it had sold "an acceptable number".

Today's Gamescom announcements are likely to be seen as an attempt to sell more Vitas to PS3 owners.

PlayStation 4 'Orbis' could rewrite the rules for used games

Sony is refusing to comment, but according to one new report, a successor to the PlayStation 3 is already in the works, and on target for a late 2013 launch. Citing anonymous sources familiar with the new console, the gaming blog Kotaku has published a preliminary run-down on the PlayStation 4, which has allegedly been slapped with the codename of Orbis.

Among the purported specs on the Orbis: a resolution of 4096x2160, which, as Kotaku notes, is "far in excess of the needs of most current HDTV sets." The Orbis – or PS4, if you'd like – will "also be capable of playing 3D games in 1080p. Some game studios may have already received development kits for the Orbis; "more finalised beta units will be shipped" by the end of the year,Kotaku adds.

But the most interesting revelation has to do with a crack-down on used games. Games for the new console will reportedly be available as a PlayStation Network download or as a disc. But "[I]f you buy the disc, it must be locked to a single PSN account, after which you can play the game, save the whole thing to your HDD, or peg it as 'downloaded' in your account history and be free to download it at a later date," Kotaku writes.

This would, of course, drastically affect the used game market: You can't trade-in a downloaded game, nor would anyone want to buy a second-hand game that's already been "locked" to another account. So is Sony actually considering taking a similar approach with its next console? Maybe, Ian Paul writes over at PC World.

"While these are only claims from anonymous sources at this point," Paul writes, "the idea that console makers are looking to destroy or at least restrict the second-hand gaming and rental market is not surprising. The move could push more users toward using Sony's PSN Store to download game titles."

Xbox 720 & PS4 Specs 'Must Deliver Maximum Computing Power' - Epic

Xbox 720 and PS4 specs must step up the computing potential of next-gen consoles to stay relevant, says Epic Games.

Published on Mar 14, 2012

Xbox 720 and PS4 must deliver to their fullest potential in the next generation to match the challenges of the games industry, according to Epic Games founder Tim Sweeney.

Both Xbox 720 and PS4 hare yet to be unveiled, but Sweeney believes that whatever comes next for Microsoft and Sony will really have to raise the bar.

In an interview with Games Industry International, Sweeney explained that the next generation of consoles have to, "Deliver the maximum amount of computing power that is economically possible. Really, that's the reason consoles exist in the future."

"They have an enormous amount of graphics processing power that delivers an experience that goes far beyond what you can get on a lighter weight device."

"Pushing forward, we measure that performance in teraflops, trillions of floating point operations per second. When I started programming, you had about one thousand floating point operations per second."

"Now we have, on nVidia's fastest hardware, two and a half to three teraflops. To push next-generation up to those levels will really ensure that they will remain relevant for another generation, even as other cool consumer devices like iPads and iPhones become more prevalent."

But with no word on when Xbox 720 or PS4 are to be unveiled, anxious gamers will have to keep waiting for the next generation to fully kick off.
