Alienware M14x R2 Gaming Laptop

System Review: Ivy Bridge lands on Dell’s venerable line of Alienware gaming laptops.

From the outside there’s little to differentiate Alienware’s R2 version of its M14x laptop, but inside it’s a generational leap from the original. Designed around the recently released mobile Ivy Bridge processors, it’s a desktop replacement at heart, eschewing the push towards ultra-thin and light laptops that’s dominating the mobile computing space at the moment.

Being able to pack enough performance for serious gaming into a 14in laptop is a challenge, though, something made clear when one looks at the specifications for the M14x. It is available with a variety of processors, from the reasonable to the ludicrous, yet it tops out graphically with a GeForce GT 650M.

Given that NVIDIA has sneakily rebadged a bunch of its old Fermi GPUs to bulk out the 600M lineup, we’re at least happy that the 650M is based upon Kepler, but it’s slightly disappointing that you can’t opt for a higher end GPU in the M14x – if you want more power you need to look at the larger M17x and its RADEON HD 7970M.

In the CPU stakes, however, there are no such limitations, with the M14X available in specifications from a more than competent Core i5-3210M all the way up to the monster in Intel’s mobile line-up, the Core i7-3820QM. This can be paired with up to 16GB of DDR3, and hard drive configurations range from 1TB mechanical drives to 256GB SSDs.

This massive range of customisation means that you can get an M14X for anything from $1,499 up to $3,575. Our testing has been done on a high end model, which has the Core i7-3820QM, 16GB DDR, 256GB SSD and an Atheros Killer Wireless-N adapter, all of which cost a premium over the standard model.

This is all packed into the familiar, robust Alienware chassis. While the actual look has the potential to be somewhat polarising, one can’t fault the build quality of these laptops. The 14in 1600 x 900 screen looks crisp and clear (although sadly covered in glare catching glass), the rubberised palmrest is comfortable, and the keyboard is actually fairly decent for a classic scissor-switch design. As is the way with these models, you can customise both the keyboard backlighting and the other highlights on the laptop via Alienware’s software.

In terms of performance the M14x isn’t going to run Battlefield 3 at Ultra settings, but we were able to achieve playable framerates at high detail. It scored P1993 in 3DMark, and running our Unigine test at the native 1600 x 900 resolution resulted in an average framerate of 15.5 fps. Tweaking down the tessellation to normal and reducing AA resulted in a much smoother average of 26fps. We were able to run Diablo 3 quite happily with everything except shadows maxed out, sitting at 50fps most of the time, but with playable framerates even when dipping during the more chaotic moments of gameplay.

It does get a little loud when the fans spin up to accommodate such moments of frenetic clicking, but that’s one of the prices you pay for such a powerful laptop. It also makes for quite a battery sucking machine, so you won’t want to be far from a power point when using it (thankfully a new generation of gaming Ultrabooks is starting to appear, if you want to balance mobility with gaming).

There’s a lot to like about the M14x R2, however we’d suggest that the system we reviewed is overkill. Ultimately the limiting factor to performance is the GPU, so you could happily get by with any of the Core i7 options on offer - the Core i7-3820QM comes with a $499 price premium over the Core i7-3610QM, which will be more than ample for gaming on the laptop. You can probably also save a little when it comes to the RAM, and you’ll likely want to look into the hard drive based configurations rather than the SSD.

NVIDIA Kepler Cards in Alienware to Continue Delivering Maximum Performance for Gamers

A little over a month ago, we announced the first wave of major hardware upgrades for our Alienware line of laptops based on the newest Intel Ivy Bridge processors and also NVIDIA GeForce 6-series cards. Since then, NVIDIA has certainly kept busy as they continue to introduce more members of the next-generation Kepler family such as the GTX 690, GTX 670, and most recently, the GTX 680M.

Alienware M17x/M18x getting GTX680M options

By the time you read this, NVIDIA will have finally revealed the details of their GTX 680M from Computex 2012 in Taipei, Taiwan. The GTX 680M is based on the GK104 Kepler architecture and features similar silicon to its beefy desktop version, the GTX 680. NVIDIA calls this card the ‘fastest, most advanced gaming notebook GPU ever built’ and we have little reason to argue otherwise.

NVIDIA Kepler Cards in Alienware to Continue Delivering Maximum Performance for Gamers
On the flip side of that power-packed coin, customers who order a system with the GTX 680M will also see greater improvements to power efficiency utilizing NVIDIA’s Optimus technology which enables long battery life by automatically switching on the dedicated GPU only when necessary. All in all, the GTX 680M paves the way for superior next-gen mobile gaming performance and makes the most of the additional technologies below that can only be found on GeForce GPUs:

  • Adaptive V-sync – newly developed technology for a smoother gameplay experience
  • Advanced AA modes – for crisper images, including NVIDIA FXAA and new TXAA
  • PhysX support – for accelerated in-game physics
  • NVIDIA 3D Vision 2 technology – for bigger, brighter, more comfortable 3D gaming
  • 3DTV Play software – for connecting notebooks to 3DTVs for the most immersive gaming experience to be had in a living room
  • NVIDIA SLI technology – for up to double the gaming performance. Two GeForce GTX 680M GPUs in SLI mode represent the fastest notebook graphics solution available anywhere
  • CUDA technology support – for high-performance GPU computing applications

We are particularly proud to be a launch partner with NVIDIA for the GTX 680M. The Alienware M17x will be available with the GeForce GTX 680M 2GB DDR5 GPU along with the option for the NVIDIA 3D Vision technology. The Alienware M18x will also be available with the GeForce GTX 680M GPU in single or dual-card SLI configurations before the end of the month.

Alienware Aurora preparing for GTX 690 option

The Alienware M17x and M18x aren’t the only two products getting the Kepler kick, and they certainly won’t be the last. Before the end of the month, we will have configuration options to allow users to equip their custom built Aurora with the newly released GeForce GTX 690.

Based on many of the initial reviews of the GTX 690 as can be seen Anandtech and Hot Hardware, most people have drawn one consistent conclusion; the GTX 690 is easily the most powerful single-card GPU they have ever tested. With that level of graphical power and performance, we have been working with NVIDIA to offer the GTX 690 in our Alienware Aurora R4 desktops in order to equip our ultimate gaming machines with even more processing power.
NVIDIA Kepler Cards in Alienware to Continue Delivering Maximum Performance for Gamers
The GeForce GTX690 is certainly a fantastic and ridiculously powerful pairing for the Alienware Aurora. The GTX 690 brings all the performance of a dual GTX 680 SLI setup while drawing less power and outputting less noise – all while staying within the same thermal levels. Considering that the Aurora uses a mini-ITX board, the GTX 690 allows for users to enjoy the pinnacle of dual-card performance without having to deal with PCI-e slot spacing, drastic thermal levels, or slim dual card watercooled GPU blocks.

Again, expect the GTX 680M on the M17x/M18x and GTX 690 to be available for the Alienware Aurora R4 worldwide before the end of the month on Alienware.com or also Dell.com. Be sure to stay tuned to our Direct2Dell blog to be alerted of the exact date that both card upgrades become available.

Dell XPS One:All-in-One PC Feature Intel Ivy Bridge,Sleek Design

Dell XPS One:All-in-One PC Feature Intel Ivy Bridge,Sleek DesignhipsThe Dell XPS One 27 is Dell’s highest end and largest all-in-one to date. Its display has four-times the resolution of a 720p HDTV. With the Inspiron One 23 and One 27, the new Dell AIO will arrive in the U.S. in a few weeks.

Dell has introduced three new all-in-one (AiO) PCs featuring the latest Intel Ivy Bridge processors; minimized footprints with one-cord designs; and what it’s calling “timeless” aesthetics that it hopes will continue to appeal to users over the long term in both office and home environments.

The XPS One 27 is both the highest-end and largest AiO that Dell has ever made. It features a 27-inch display with a Full Quad HD resolution of 2560 x 1440 pixels—the equivalent of four times the clarity of a 720p HDTV. Dell is expecting an audience including photographers and video editors, whether professional or hobbyists, for the One 27, and to support such activities it has included Intel third-generation quad-core processors with Intel Turbo Boost Technology.

The XPS One 27 also offers Intel HD 400 graphics, with optional Nvidia GeForge GT 640M with 2GB of DDR5; 4GB of standard memory that’s configurable up to 16GB, with 2 DIMM (dual in-line memory module) slots; the option of a 2TB 3.5-inch 7200RPM hard drive or an optional HDD plus a 32GB mSATA SSD with Intel Smart Response Technology; a slot-loading DVD drive with optional Blu-Ray disc combo drive; and a full HD Webcam with dual digital microphone array for video calls.

With a new stand design and metallic silver housing that Dell expects will make a nice addition to any living room, there’s also an optional TV tuner, as well as Waves MaxxAudio 4 and Infinity speakers with integrated 7.1 surround sound.

Dell’s two new Inspiron models, the One 23 and One 20, are family PCs—AiOs for kitchen counters and living room desks, again with clean, one-cord designs and wireless keyboards and mice that slide under the displays to minimize clutter.

The One 23 features a 23-inch, full HD 1920 by 1080 WLED display and up to a third-generation Intel Core i7 processor, though second-generation Core i3 and i5 processors are also options.

The One 23 comes standard with Intel HD 4000 graphics, though a 1GB DDR3 AMD Radeon HD 7650A is optional. Memory can be configured up to 8GB of DD3 memory and 2 DIMM slots, and up to a 2TB 3.5-inch 7200RPM hard drive. There’s a slot-loading DVD drive with optional Blu-Ray disc combo drive, and HD Webcam with dual digital microphone array for video calls, plus HD audio with Waves MaxxAudio 3.

On the smaller One 20, expect a 20-inch HD 1600 by 900 WLED display; 2nd-Generation Intel processor options; DDR3 memory up to 6GB, with 2 DIMM slots; and an up to 1TB 3.5-inch 7200RPM hard drive. There’s the option of a Blu-Ray disc reader drive and, like its larger sibling, it comes with MaxxAudio 3, an HD Webcam, Microsoft Windows 7 Home premium and multiple connectivity options.

“As part of the reimagining of our entire XPS and Inspiron portfolio, we are likewise reimagining our all-in-ones as stunning systems that are the centerpieces of any room,” Sam Burd, Dell’s vice president and general manager of product development, said in a May 29 statement.

In the United States, Dell is the second-ranking PC maker, shipping 3.5 million units during the first quarter of 2012—a dip of 3.6 percent year over year—compared to market leader Hewlett-Packard’s 4.5 million. Globally, Dell is now in the number three spot, having fallen behind fast-rising Lenovo, which, with 28.1 percent growth during the quarter, is coming faster on the heels of HP, which managed a 3.5 percent uptick, according to research firm Gartner.

Gartner analysts suggested that Dell’s shipments were “mainly due to low-end consumer systems, to which Dell gave low priority.”

With Burd calling Dell’s new AiOs “compelling” options and “phenomenal values,” and with several announcements of new Dell business lineups to come in the following weeks, Dell appears hard at work, defending its share of a market in flux.

All three AiOs are now available in Asia and will beginning shipping to the United States and other countries, says Dell, “in the coming weeks.” The XPS One 27 will start at $1,399; the Inspiron One 23 at $749; and the Inspiron One 20 at $529.

Dell Windows 8 tablet config seems weak

Dell Windows 8 tablet config seems weakDetails have leaked of what we can expect from the first generation Dell Windows 8 tablet, and the specs don't seem adequate.

Some details are beginning to emerge of what we can expect from the first generation of Intel-based Windows 8 tablets. If the leaked specs of the Dell Windows 8 tablet are any indication, though, the devices may be severely underwhelming.

According to information shared by Neowin, the upcoming Dell tablet will sport a dual-core Intel Cloverleaf processor, 2GB of RAM, and 128GB of SSD storage. The RAM and storage capacity are larger than most of the tablets currently available, but this is an Intel x86 device, not an ARM-based tablet, so it's not as impressive as it sounds.

Forget for a minute that it's a tablet. Consider the hardware in your current Windows desktop or laptop. Most systems have quad-core processors and at least 4GB of RAM--and that's just enough to run smoothly. Many high-end desktops have processors with six or more cores, and 12GB or even 16GB of RAM.

To be fair, many entry-level laptops have specs similar to the Dell Windows 8 tablet--dual-core processors and 2GB of RAM--but they also cost only $300 or so. When someone buys a bargain laptop with hardware that just meets the minimum requirements to run Windows, they expect that performance will suffer.

Will users be willing to pay a premium to get that same mediocre system in tablet form? While there is no pricing yet announced for these Windows 8 tablets, it seems relatively safe to assume they'll cost more than $300. In fact, I won't be surprised if they come in somewhere between $700 and $1000.

Windows 8 RT tablets will probably have hardware specs and capabilities closer to existing tablets like the Apple iPad. Unfortunately, Windows 8 RT can't run traditional Windows software, and won't be able to connect to a Windows network domain, so it doesn't offer a very compelling proposition. Unless Windows 8 RT tablets are significantly cheaper than the iPad or Android counterparts, it may be tough for the devices to gain traction.

There are still more questions than answers, and we'll have to wait and see when the Windows 8 tablets hit the shelves. But, based on current and previous versions of the Windows operating system I am less than enthusiastic about the prospect of running Windows in 2GB of RAM on a dual-core processor.

A lot will depend on Microsoft, and even more will depend on the hardware vendors package the OS in. Even with a solid OS and tablet hardware, the cost of Windows 8 tablets could be a fatal flaw as well.

Dell announces first server with Intel's Ivy Bridge Xeon chips

Dell announces first server with Intel's Ivy Bridge Xeon chipsDell's PowerEdge C5220 microserver is the first server to be announced with Intel's Xeon E3-1200 V2 chips

Dell on Tuesday announced a new microserver with Intel's first Xeon server processors based on the Ivy Bridge microarchitecture, which has not been officially announced by the chip maker yet.

Dell's PowerEdge C5220 is one of the first servers with Xeon chips based on the Ivy Bridge microarchitecture. The server is targeted at web 2.0, cloud and high-performance applications, Dell said in a statement.

The server runs on Intel's Xeon E3-1200 V2 series processors, which are faster and more power-efficient than previous E3 chips based on the Sandy Bridge microarchitecture.

An Intel spokesman said the new chips provide more performance-per-watt, and a server with E3-1200 V2 processors drawing 17 watts of power in a 3U rack space could provide 53 percent more performance than a 20-watt Sandy Bridge Xeon CPU.

The Xeon E3-1200 V2 chips draw between 17 watts and 45 watt of power, Dell said. The new Xeon E3-1200 V2 chips are made using the 22-nanometer process and include 3D transistors, which are faster and more power-efficient than 2D transistors found in existing 32-nm process chips.

Intel could not share further information about the new Xeon processors. Intel in April said that it would release its first Xeon server chips based on the Ivy Bridge microarchitecture later this quarter, which would be targeted at microservers. Microservers are low-power servers with shared components designed mainly for web serving and cloud applications.

The PowerEdge C5220 can scale performance while reducing the number of servers in a datacenter. Dell said. The server marker said the new microservers helped one company consolidate four servers into one while running a software infrastructure based on the LAMP (Linux, Apache, MySQL and PHP software) stack.

The microserver will become available on May 22 starting at US$12,210, Dell said.

Dell Launch Ivy Bridge Powered Alienware Gaming Laptops

Dell Launch Ivy Bridge Powered Alienware Gaming Laptops
Dell on Monday released three new high-performance Alienware gaming laptops powered by Intel's third-generation Core processors, also known as Ivy Bridge. The new lineup includes 14-, 17.3-, and 18.4-inch notebooks featuring the latest mobile graphics from Nvidia and Advanced Micro Devices.

Along with the introduction of the new Alienware M14x, M17x, and M18x laptops, Dell announced a collaboration with Electronic Arts to implement Dell's AlienFX software and lighting control system in Battlefield 3, the computer maker said in a statement. Gamers playing Battlefield 3 on an Alienware rig will also have access to an exclusive Alienware Arena dog tag in the first-person shooter.

"Our customers want the most immersive gaming experience possible, and we've taken the all-powerful M14x, M17x, and M18x laptops and made them even better, delivering the latest technologies for almost every need," Alienware general manager Frank Azor said. "We've always offered the latest technology for the best gaming experience possible, and our enhanced lineup will let you 'pwn' any competitor and provide the sensory experience that we know you crave."
The Alienware M14x starts at $1,099, the M17x is priced at $1,499, and the M18x carries a price tag of $1,999. All three laptops are currently available for order on Dell.com and Alienware.com.

The M14x is available in a number of configurations. The standard setup uses a second-generation Sandy Bridge processor from Intel, the 2.5-GHz Core i5-2450M, but the laptop can also be configured with one of three Ivy Bridge chips—the 2.3-GHz Core i7-3610QM, 2.6-GHz Core i7-3720QM, or 2.7-GHz Core i7-3820QM. Discrete graphics options include Nvidia's GeForce GT 650M with either 1GB or 2GB of GDDR5 memory. The M14x can be kitted out with either a 750GB mechanical disk drive or a 512GB solid state drive (SSD), with standard-issue 6GB memory up to 16GB.

The M17x has CPU option for either the 2.3-GHz Core i7-3610QM, 2.6-GHz Core i7-3720QM, or 2.7-GHz Core i7-3820QM. The laptop's standard configuration uses Nvidia's GeForce GT 660M graphics processor, with options to upgrade to either the GeForce GT 675M or AMD's Radeon HD 7970M (all three discrete graphics options have 2GB of memory). The laptop can be configured with up to 32GB of memory, with 500GB and 1TB options for storage, as well as an option for a 512GB SSD.

The M18x can be configured with the same processor options as the M17x, plus Intel's 2.9-GHz Core i7-3920XM. The standard graphics option is the GeForce GT 660M, but choices also include the GeForce GT 675M, plus a dual-card option for GeForce GT 675M with Nvidia SLI or the Radeon HD 7970M with AMD CrossFireX (the AMD dual-card setup will be made available at a later date, according to Dell). Memory can be configured from 8GB to 32GB, a 500GB hard disk is standard, but a 750GB drive is also available, as are dual- and triple-drive options
.
All three laptops run Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium, Professional, or Ultimate and have integrated 10/100/1000Mbps Gigabit Ethernet NIC and Integrated Wireless-N with Bluetooth 4.0, plus an option for WiMax.

List of Intel Ivy Bridge Laptops to be Released In 2012

List of Intel Ivy Bridge Laptops to be Released In 2012The actual announce and release date for Intel’s new Ivy Bridge, the 3rd generation of Core processors, has been a moving target to say the least. After much shifting around on the calendar it appears Monday April 23rd is going to be the day Intel finally puts out a press release and allows manufacturers such as Dell, HP and Lenovo to start promoting their new Ivy Bridge equipped laptops. It was expected Intel would be making an announcement on April 9th, but that got pushed back due to supply issues. Toshiba decided they couldn’t wait any longer to tell the world what new laptops they had, so announced the L800, C800 and P800, S800 laptops this week. HP has updates to its Pavilion line ready and waiting in the wings, and had to push back their announce date to align with Intel – not that we don’t know everything about the updated 2012 Pavilion dv6 and dv7 already thanks to various leaks.

Intel Ivy Bridge

The new Intel Ivy Bridge processors will feature a smaller 22 nanometer fabrication process and offer more powerful performance but less power draw. That feat is achieved through use of new tri-gate transistors with faster switching capabilities than the current Sandy Bridge processors. There will also be more transistors per chip, and since more equals better performance that’s a good thing. Intel is claiming up to 20% improved processing performance and up to 50% improved graphics with the new HD 4000 integrated GPU. Even though performance improves the battery life will not suffer, in fact Intel is saying the reduced power consumption of the upcoming new Core processors will save up to 20% on power, which could result in 20% better battery life. Couple that with a more power efficient SSD and the next generation of laptops are sure to push the limits of battery life.
