Intel Ivy Bridge processors finally coming next week

Intel Ivy Bridge processors is finally coming out of the closet next week. The release of Intel’s Ivy Bridge microprocessors has been delayed for some months now since its last release date in April. Due to some unepected delays in the manufacturing process, the processors would be announced sometime at the end of April now and the release date would fall in June.

Sean Maloney, Intel’s executive vice president and chairman of Intel China said about the release date of the first Ivy Bridge chips, “I think maybe it’s June now.” Initially the release date was in April.

The chips that are covered in this announcement are the Core i7 and Core i7 Extreme families of mobile processors and Core i5-3570K, i5-3570T, i5-3550, i5-3550S, i5-3450 and i5-3450S desktop processors.

On the other hand, Patrick Moorhead of Forbes reported that Intel PR inform that the delay of Ivy Bridge is only a few weeks long.

In both the cases, computer makers can ship the next-generation Ultrabooks in time during the third quarter of this year for the shopping season.

The fabled Ivy Bridge processor of Intel boasts a chip microarchitecture to a 22-nanometer process, using 3D transistors. In Intel’s words, this translates to double the speed or double the performance – whatever you say! It also translates to a big gain in battery life on the computers. This is in comparison to the current 32-nanometer process for Sandy Bridge microprocessors

Besides the better performance and speed, the new processor would also induce the drop in price of Ultrabooks.

It was reported in DigiTimes that unnamed sources revealed that the price of Ultrabooks would fall by 20% to 30% following the release of Ivy Bridge. The cost of Ultrabooks range from $1,400 and more (Samsung’s Series 9), to $800.

Along with the release of Ivy Bridge, Intel is also planning a big marketing push for Ultrabooks from spring.

The release of Ivy Bridge by this May would mean that powerful, high-end and blazing fast laptops fitted with Core i7 processors would be out in the market by spring. There would also be on show gaming laptops like the Samsung Series 7 gaming laptop, packed with a Core i7 processor and NVidia graphics card.

June third is the release date for the rest of the gang, that includes the dual-core Core i5 and Core i7 mobile processors and Core i5-3570, i5-3570S, i5-3475S, i5-3470, i5-3470S and i5-3470T desktop CPUs.

This may make it the summer of Ultrabooks with Ivy Bridge processors, as the Computex electronics trade show in Taipei is being held from June 5-9–prime time for laptop manufacturers to show off their new laptops. Expect Ultrabooks and other laptops with Ivy Bridge Core i5 and Core i7 processors in many back-to-school circulars too.
